harbour typefacee

Harbour Typeface is inspired by hand-painted signs and icons on trawlers from Reykjavík´s harbour. The typeface is a geometric sans serif with an industrial and contemporary feel. The signs are hand-painted and have a personality of awkwardness and imperfection. The aim was to keep these features during the digitalization of the letter forms.
The signs don't have any lower-case letters so in the typeface they are modeled from the grid and form of the upper-case letters. Some of the signs are melted in steel and therefore have cut corners. These original details are kept in the typeface.
The font comes with a functional design package including all Western European characters, an icon set and classical and customized ligatures for the Icelandic language. Further details are in the type specimen, that will be available during the show.
The typeface can be used on digital form on the website displayed. The website is the starting point of the type foundry Continue which is a collaborative project of Elsa Jónsdóttir and mine. The two typefaces are part of an research and preperation for the establishment of the foundry. Continue's objective is not only producing functional typefaces, but additionally having each typeface reference its inspiration through the form and presentation of the letter.

icelandic design award

The Icelandic Design Award

The Icelandic Design Award, designed by Björn Loki Björnsson and Elsa Jónsdóttir takes its inspiration from light. It symbolises the ‘lightbulb moment’ of getting ideas, guiding the way in creative work as well as putting someone in the spotlight.

The identity font is based on the curves of the neon light. The award trophy is a three-dimensional represantion of the font, more importantly the three letters h, ö and n, which are the first letters of the Icelandic word hönnun, which means ‘design’.

For the Iceland Design Award, they designed a typeface, which they then took to three-dimensional form to make a sign from the logo and a trophy together with Kristín María Sigþórsdóttir.

mæna

MÆNA #5
Technology

—

Mæna is a yearly magazine about graphic design in Iceland, published by the department of Design and Architecture – Visual Communication, Iceland Academy of the Arts. Each year has its own theme, and for the 2014 issue Mæna dealt with technology. Designers, academics and students wrote articles on subjects ranging from electronics of the past to dreams of the far future. Graphic design is dependent on technology and is often about making it more accessible. Our intention was to express this in a clear, creative and innovative manner.

The team consisted of 17 students, editor Dóra Ísleifsdóttir and creative directors Birna Geirfinnsdóttir and Lóa Auðunsdóttir. We wanted the magazine itself to be a comment on the designer’s toolkit, using methods such as laser cutting and folding techniques while abstaining from glue and traditional binding methods.

Mæna is set in Adobe Caslon and Apercu, and printed on Colorit, Chromolux and Munken Polar.
Published in 500 copies and hand-bound by the team.
